"And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life,[a] and set on fire by hell.[b] 7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison." James 3:6-8 (ESV)

The bible says the tongue can set on fire the course of nature. This fire can the be a source of heat and light or it can be a source of destruction. Like fire, our words can be either productive or destructive. "Dear brothers and sisters, not many of you should become teachers in the church, for we who teach will be judged more strictly. Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.” James 3:1-2 (NLT)

The words that we speak let us know whether our hearts are in good shape or not. They give us clues to whether we are being transformed by God’s Spirit or simply just stagnant (not growing). The Bible says, “…For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks” (Luke 6:45 - ESV). When I first believed in Jesus, I lost half of my vocabulary, if you know what I mean.
