True Friend

“There are ‘friends’ who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother.” - NLT Proverbs 18:24

When we think of what a true friend is, words like loyal, kind, fun, and dependable come to mind. Another characterization of a true friend, is someone who “understands me and what I’m going through now.” It’s because of this desire to be understood and to have companionship, especially in the worst of situations, that we have sought friendship with someone who has or is going through what we are currently wrestling with. But there is a friend who knows exactly what you are going through. That friend is Jesus. In fact, Hebrews 4:15 (NLT), talking about Jesus, says, “(He)…understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings (hardships) we do, yet he did not sin (emphases mine).” Imagine a friend, who knows exactly what you are feeling, and understands how hard it really is. Jesus struggled with the pull of peer pressure, and the desire to be selfish, “Yet”, it says, He did not sin. He never let the hardships He faced to compromise who He was. Because He felt what we felt, we can go to Him and share whatever is on our heart, and whatever we are going through, and He will have compassion and understanding for us and our situation. Because He was God in a bod, He has a plan for us to overcome, and come out on the other side with gratitude instead of regret. Know, that when you are feeling alone and misunderstood, you have a true friend you can go to and share openly, and He will embrace you and your pain, and frustration, saying, “I understand.”
