A Command With a Promise
"Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 'Honor your father and mother,' which is the first commandment with promise: “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.'” - NKJV Ephesians 6:1-3
Who would have ever thought there would be a reward for obeying your parents every day? Often, we struggle with obedience because we enjoy being in control and having things our way. I blame the world we live in for promoting this type of behavior. I see more kids in control of their parents these days instead of the other way around; the way God intended for it to be. I received many time outs and whippings in my childhood, but I’m not angry at my parents because they disciplined me. It taught me how to be a respectable young person instead of a brat. It helped me understand the importance of obedience. The Word of Life makes it clear that when we honor our parents or guardians, we receive a promise from God. That promise states that we will have a good and long life when we obey those that care for us. Ephesians 6:1-3 also gives four facial reasons why we should obey our parents. (1) It is “in the Lord,” (2) it is “right,” (3) it is a “commandment,” (4) it has a “promise.” Pray today and thank God for His word and pray that His word would convict you when you lack obedience.
