"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8 (NLT)
In John 20, Jesus “breathed” on the disciples, and they became “Born Again.” At that moment they were brand new creations with God’s Holy Spirit living inside of them. In our verse today, right before Jesus ascends into Heaven, He tells them when they stay in Jerusalem and wait, they will receive a great and mighty work of the Holy Spirit. This work, He says, is the Holy Spirit coming “upon” them and empowering them (supernaturally), to live a life dead (unresponsive) to the flesh and alive to God (witnesses - to proclaim with our lives and words). This empowerment will also ignite a passion in their hearts for the lost and give them the ability to share the Gospel (Good News of Jesus’s sacrifice for our sins and resurrection from the dead to give us new life) with great effectiveness. Ask yourself, “Does my life reflect, that I have been empowered with the Holy Spirit. Is there a noticeable difference in my life concerning sin. Am I still trapped in the same sins, or is sin losing its grip in my life, and I see myself growing in trust and obedience? Is my heart broken for the lost, and do I look for ways to share Jesus with my words and actions?" If your answers to these questions reveal that You have not allowed the Holy Spirit to do this work in your life, don’t be sad, it’s not to late. If there is still breath in your lungs, TODAY is your Acts 1:8 day. If you will simply ask Jesus to allow the Holy Spirit to “come upon” you with His power and fill you with His love for the lost, you will experience a freedom you’ve never known, and a love and concern for the lost you have only heard of. He desires to empower you for a purpose; to be his witnesses to a lost and dying world.
