I have made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman.” - Job 31:1 (NIV)
“Don’t take your eyes off the ball!” It is the first thing we are told when we start learning how to play sports. If you aren’t focused on what the goal is you will miss it. The same principles are true when you examine your personal relationship with God. When we take our eyes off of what’s really important we miss the goal.
Looking at someone lustfully devalues them by turning them into an object we worship with our eyes, and is the side product of a bigger issue which is not keeping our eyes on the goal. Jesus once said “If your eye is causing you to sin then pluck it out. It is better for you to enter heaven with one eye than have two eyes and go to hell.” Mk 9:47 His desire is not for us to go around blind because we cannot control the physical desires of our heart. Jesus desire is for us to have a complete change of heart and for us to gaze directly into his face so that we can know him on a more personal level. Jesus knows life is hard, remember, he was here with us and went through the same temptations we face daily. The difference is that Jesus never missed the goal, he always kept his eye on the ball.
To not be distracted by things the world throws at us, we have to focus on the goal, which, for us is salvation through the forgiveness that only Jesus can offers us. So today, acknowledge to God that you sometimes miss the goal because you have taken your eyes off of him. Accept the life that Jesus has given you and allow the Holy Spirit to guide your eyes in everything that you do so that you do not miss the goal, a life with him forever!
