“Do everything without complaining and arguing, so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people.” Philippians 2:14-15 (NLT)
What’s really behind complaining for a Jesus follower? As Christians, we believe that God is in control of the things concerning our lives, and that He can take any circumstance and turn it around for our good and His Praise (Rom. 8:28). Complaining says, “I don’t like where You currently have me, and I don’t trust you will work out for my best in the end.” Doesn’t sound so great when you hear it for what it really is, does it? Complaining is the foolproof evidence that we really aren’t trusting Christ. People who don’t follow or believe in Jesus have some reason to complain. Because, they can only depend on themselves and other limited people, they have no guarantee things will get better or work out. But, those of us who are Jesus followers have every reason to believe things will work out, and so we have no valid reason to complain. When we live, trusting God has His hand on us and every area of our lives, we will live and look different from those who live with no certainty. Peace and contentment will mark our lives and it will cause us to stick out (shine). People will take notice and be drawn to the hope that we possess in Christ. Ask God to help you trade in your complaining for contentment. Be satisfied where you currently are, knowing God is not just sitting around, but is working in and around your life, so you will let Him do a deeper work in you. Recognize that every situation is an opportunity for spiritual growth (that’s what really matters) and let prayer and praise guide you instead. What has complaining ever done for you?
