"A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” Proverbs 17:22 (ESV)
Is there someone in your life whom you just love to be around? Always smiling, calm and collected, doesn’t fake it, just happy all the time, or at least most of the time. We can all think of a person like that. I’m sure you can also think of someone in your life that just seems to bring you down anytime you’re around him or her. They’re always complaining, it’s never their fault, angry, bitter, or just mean all the time, or at least most of the time. Maybe you are one of those two people. Either way we see in Proverbs that our attitude affects you and the people around you. A person’s attitude by definition is their, “settled way of thinking that reflects in his or her behavior,” meaning that it is a choice. Not to say that circumstances and upbringing don’t affect that choice, but in the end it is a choice. You have a choice of what your settled way of thinking will be everyday. You have the choice to have joy in your life, no matter your circumstances. Galatians says that one of the fruits of the spirit is joy. Jesus calls himself the true vine. “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” Abide here simply means to be with Jesus. If you see yourself as one of those people that are just miserable to be around, make the choice to abide in Jesus today. As you begin to spend time with Him through prayer and scripture study you will see over time the fruits of the spirit, especially joy, begin to sprout in your life. That fruit will be good medicine to yourself, and everyone you come into contact with. Be good medicine to the broken world around you today.
