“Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NLT)
“What is God’s will for my life?” is probably the most asked question by Jesus followers. Most of the time this question is asked concerning, dating (and since dating’s purpose is to discover who your spouse will be, not just to “hook up”; you probably shouldn’t be dating unless you’re ready to get married - just sayin’), car purchases, college choices, etc… The questions we raise when trying to discover God’s will are usually materialistic. This verse show’s us that God’s perfect will for us has nothing to do with the outward and temporary, but the inward and eternal. God’s desire for us is to walk in joy (an internal happiness knowing that life’s greatest fear and enemy [death] has been defeated and we are eternally protected and loved). He also wills for us to never stop praying (to stay in an attitude of acknowledging he is “with us” and “for us” and to communicate with Him often and honestly). The third thing God wills for us is to be thankful in every situation. “Why?”, you ask. The answer is that God is always looking out for our good and our growth. And since He has already seen every trouble we will ever encounter, He has already created a plan to grow us spiritually and to work it out for our benefit. But, there is a catch, You must not give up, you must submit yourself and the situation to Him. Only then will God’s perfect will, which is not about external’s but internals, be fully realized in your life. Ask God to help you desire the greater aspects (internal, spiritual) of His will for your life and the lesser aspects (external, material) will work out for your good, your growth, and His glory.
