"Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!" Psalm 46:10 (NIV)
Why don't we like to be still? What is worrisome about stillness? I believe stillness makes us come face to face with the reality of our condition. We are ultimately, scared, weak, and broken (we are not operating the way we know we should. You know, we lie, we cheat, we are selfish, etc... the Bible calls this condition sin). So we opt for movement, control, busyness. Anything that will keep us from staring into the stark realism of who we are before a Holy, perfect, and loving God. Busyness, keeps the ball moving, and keeps our eyes off of us and Him. But when we allow ourselves to be still (slow down, intentionally spend time, just think about how inadequate we are and how adequate and sufficient He is), we experience a right perspective. We experience and see things from God's view and it leads to peace. When we take time to be still before God, we recognize we have been trying to be Him in our own lives, and we in turn give the reigns back to Him and experience His provision, protection, and peace in our lives. Take some time today to find a spot away from distraction, grab your Bible and notebook. Then meditate on a certain verse from one of the gospels, or another book in the Bible, and just listen and "be still" and let God talk to you. Write down what He says. Then do what He tells you to do. If you make this a regular practice in your life, you will find, that regular times of stillness actually lead to a more productive and fruitful life. The life you were created for. Be STILL.
