"Blessed is the who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD and on it he meditates day and night." Psalm 1:1-2 (NIV)
Truly happy (blessed) people are those who don't follow the thinking and lifestyles suggested by the world, but instead who follow Jesus and His ways as taught in the Scriptures. This kind of "blessedness" doesn't happen by accident, it is the intentional decision by followers of Christ not to "walk" (listen and believe) according to the philosophies of this world. This world teaches, live for self, pleasure, and power. Jesus teaches, live for others, what matters (pleasurable or not), and use your power (strength, gifts, and influence) to serve others. This verse teaches that it starts with walking - listening to, and considering. It then moves to standing, and actually hanging around those who willfully sin apart from a relationship with Christ - doing what they do. It then moves to sitting - actually identifying with the world and what it values. We now sit in a seat of judgement, judging the things of God as bad and useless and the things of this world as good and useful. This is a slippery slope that only started with a consideration and quickly moved to affirmation. What started out as curiosity is now who I see myself as and what I measure my life by. The only way we can avoid this trap is by making the Word of God our everything. Our everything as it concerns having a relationship with Jesus and the guide for how we should live in a fallen world. When God and living according to His Word is our greatest desire, then the snares of this world will be avoided and the Happiness of the LORD will be ours. Ask God to give you a true delight for Him, His Word and His People, and to give the you the wisdom and strength to avoid the lies and snares of this world. Next time you listen to a song or watch tv, play a game called "Spot the Lie." It's simple, just ask as you listen and watch, "what is the wrong philosophy (lie) being communicated here, and what does Jesus have to say about it?" Then look for the Truth in God's Word, and if you're stumped, just contact a spiritual leader for help. You will be BLESSED!
