"In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day He was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles He had chosen. " Acts 1:1-2
Here we are at the beginning of another school year, and no doubt, if you are like most, you have already made plans to do better and be better. This year you are going to study more, work harder, practice longer, and the list goes on. You have a new beginning, and you want to make the most of it. But if you are like most, those desires and goals run into the wall of reality. You know; It's just easier to cheat, lie, work less and study even less. It's just easier being a mediocre YOU instead of the overcoming YOU Jesus created you to be. It is just easier (not wiser) to rely on our own weak, insufficient, and failing intentions, wisdom, and strength. Take a look at our verse today. Jesus began and did many things, and those things were anything but mediocre. Just read the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). They were amazing! He said and did things out of the ordinary, and Acts 1:2 gives us His secret. "After giving instructions through the Holy Spirit...". The Son of God taught, healed, overcame temptation, loved, forgave, and died on a cross for our sins, all "through the Holy Spirit." If you have made plans this school year to be better and do better, but have left dependance on Holy Spirit out of the equation, there is a good chance this year will simply be like most others - mediocre. Jesus has called you to be more and do more, but you must follow His lead and devote yourself to God through reliance on the Holy Spirit. Reliance (living by the power of) on the Holy Spirit looks like regular participation at church and youth, Bible reading, personal prayer, and sharing Jesus. If these things become central to your existence, then your year will be truly exceptional, the way Jesus intends it to be.
