Who Controls Your Tongue?

September 2, 2016

"When the day of Pentecost had come, they were (Disciples of Jesus) [emphasis mine] all together in one place.  And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance."  Acts 2:1-2,4 (NAS)

When I was growing up, I was not a good brother, especially to the older of my two sisters.  As far as I can remember, I very rarely used her given name.  Instead, I would mercilessly call her names and make fun of her.  This is something I am very ashamed of when I think back.  At 18 yrs. old, I gave my life to Christ and, I remember clearly that one of the first things that changed in me was how I talked to people and the words I used.  Let's just say, as a guy from NJ, I lost half of my vocabulary, if you get the point.  I also was unable to call my sister those terrible names anymore.  Days after giving my life to Christ, I asked my sister to forgive me for how uncaring and unkind I had been as we were growing up.  She listened, but at the time I don't think she believed me.  I can honestly say, that since then, she has only heard her name come from my lips.  You see James 3:8-12 says, "All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and creatures...have been tamed by man, but no man can tame the tongue.  It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.  With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men who have been made in God's likeness... My brothers, this should not be."  You see, it is fitting that on the day the Holy Spirit filled the Disciples, that they would speak in other tongues, showing that they were now under the control of the Holy Spirit.  Like James just taught us, no man (we are included) can tame the tongue except the Spirit of God living in them.  Without the power of the Holy Spirit, our tongues are left to our own weak uses and also become available to the enemy.  The day I was filled with the Spirit, my tongue was under the control of Another, and it was evident to all.  If you wan't to know if you are filled (under the control) with the Holy Spirit, examine what comes out of your mouth on a regular basis.  Be filled and surrender to the Spirit's control in your life, and your mouth will be a spring of life and blessing to others.
