Keep it Simple

In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “it would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.” Acts 6:1-5

Sometimes we get caught up in the complexity of scripture and we lose ourselves in unfamiliar terms, fancy words and cultural differences. We close the bible and decide we don’t understand and it is too complicated to figure out. When you peel all the “complicated, unfamiliar” away, the life lessons are simple, practical and life applicable. Look at today’s scripture and there are many lessons to learn. One thought, one truth among many relates to distractions. We all have them, things that get in our way and pre-occupy our time, consume our thoughts and keep us from doing what is most important for our being, our soul. Sometimes the things that distract us seem good and worthwhile, other times these distractions destroy us and get us way off track. In these verses one distraction was one group of people complaining about another group of people. Before they knew it, people were getting caught up in the details and involved in areas they didn’t need to be involved with. Let me ask….are you caught up in complaining about a group of people and not doing something you know you are supposed to be doing? Have you allowed distractions to interfere with your relationship with God? If so, be thankful that you have been made aware through this bible verse. Get back to the ministry of the word of God. Give your attention to prayer and reading the bible. Watch how the complexity of script will become simple.
