An Opportune Time
The Holy Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and walk along beside the carriage.” Philip ran over and heard the man reading from the prophet Isaiah. Philip asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” The man replied, “How can I, unless someone instructs me?” And he urged Philip to come up into the carriage and sit with him. Acts 8:29-31
My junior year of college I went to Panama City for spring break with my friends from Campus Crusade for Christ. The purpose of our trip was very much like what we do with the EDGE when we go to an event like “Dare to Share”. We were going to be witnessing to all the people on the beach who were drinking, taking drugs, and having as much sex as they wanted with whomever they wanted. Needless to say I was very nervous about the whole situation. One of my friends throughout the week had been shot down time after time when he would try and tell someone about the Gospel. Instead of getting angry or impatient he remained faithful and at 3:00am he hopped into a car with 2 college students he didn’t even know to go through Hardees drive through because the restaurant was closed. By the time the car had reappeared from behind the Hardees both college students had accepted Jesus.
When an angel of the Lord appeared to Philip and told him to go south into the dessert (Acts 8:26-39) he listened. He didn’t know what he was looking for or why the Lord had sent him, but his focus was on doing the will of God. Philips willingness to obey God without knowing all the details allowed the Ethiopian to come to Jesus.
Following the Lord is not always easy, in fact God makes us take steps outside our comfort zone frequently so that we do not begin relying on our own strength. God also expects us to be ready to follow his direction at a moment’s notice. Sometimes we have no idea what our friends are going through and if we are not prepared to listen and obey the Lord when he calls we miss out on opportunities to minister to those who need to hear the Gospel. My friend was prepared when the Lord called on him and because of that he got to lead 2 strangers to Christ.
Take time to pray and ask God to give you the strength and courage you need to be able to follow his will for you no matter the circumstance. Remember, faith is not something that we have to make our lives easier, we live a life of faith so that others have an example of how much God loves them. Today be spontaneous and show someone how much God loves them!
