"Paul went first to Derbe and then to Lystra, where there was a young disciple named Timothy. His mother was a Jewish believer, but his father was a Greek. Timothy was well thought of by the believers in Lystra and Iconium, so Paul wanted him to join them on their journey. In deference to the Jews of the area, he arranged for Timothy to be circumcised before they left, for everyone knew that his father was a Greek." Acts 16:1-3 (NLT)

Who in your life has been a spiritual influence for Jesus? Is it a parent, a friend, a grandparent, a coach, a neighbor? In our story it was Timothy’s mom and a grandmother named Lois. Lois is mentioned in 2 Timothy 1:5. Many Bible teachers believe Timothy is a late teenager at this point and Paul was mentoring him. Timothy came from a tough home environment that many teenagers today can relate to. His mom was a believer and his dad wasn’t. Maybe that is your situation at home, or maybe it is flipped. Like me growing up, maybe neither of your parents follow Jesus. But here is the beauty of Jesus; He asks each of us, like He did with the disciples, to come and follow Him regardless of our family dynamic. He doesn’t ask us if our parents or friends are coming along, just us! If Jesus is asking you to follow Him, and He is; don’t look over your shoulder to see who else may be coming. You may stand there a long time. If one or both of your parents/guardians follow Jesus, be thankful that you have a godly example in your life. If you don’t have a believer in your home, be thankful that your life with Jesus is not dependent on them. In fact, Jesus is calling YOU to be the godly influence in their life, the way I'm sure Timothy was in his father’s. As a late teenager, I had the amazing privilege of leading both my mom and grandmother to the LORD! I am incredibly thankful for those moments. Like Timothy, be thankful for godly influences, and be thankful that you are one! As you follow Jesus, ask who needs to experience Jesus through the influence of your life?
