Good Luck Charm
“Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know of, but who are you?” Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.” Acts 19:13-16 NIV
Growing up in today’s society, the name of Jesus gets thrown around a lot, and it wasn’t much different back in Paul’s day. God is seen more as a rabbit’s foot for a lot of people, and this was true of myself at one point. I used His name to try to receive luck to play well in a basketball game or do well on a test I didn’t study for. Ironically, this never really worked. The name of Jesus is so powerful for those who have faith. These exorcists thought the name of “Jesus” would magically make evil spirits disappear, but what they didn’t realize is that they lacked faith behind the name.
Even demons know Jesus; Jesus is the one who defeated them in the first place when He died and rose from the dead for you and me. If you carry faith in Jesus, demons should know who you are, too. And you have the power of the Holy Spirit of Jesus to overcome whatever they may throw at you. The devil viewed these exorcists not as disciples of Jesus who would be a threat to them, but as those who they could control because they weren’t fully surrendered to Jesus. Don’t just be complacent with trying to use Jesus has a lucky charm. Become Jesus’ disciple and walk with Him day by day; He wants you and He will use His Spirit to give you the strength to overcome whatever you may be facing!
