"About that time, serious trouble developed in Ephesus concerning the Way. It began with Demetrius, a silversmith who had a large business manufacturing silver shrines of the Greek goddess Artemis. He kept many craftsmen busy. He called them together… and addressed them as follows:
“Gentlemen, you know that our wealth comes from this business. But as you have seen and heard, this man Paul has persuaded many people that handmade gods aren’t really gods at all. And he’s done this not only here in Ephesus but throughout the entire province!" Acts 19:23-26 (NLT)
Like Demetrius, we may have created a way of life around something that does not produce life at all. We are all good at creating things or buying things and then putting our trust in them to make us happy. That is a lot of pressure for something that isn’t alive, and can’t interact with us on a personal level. Even if what you are putting your hope in is a person, that is still too much pressure. What person can know you and treat you perfectly? What person can always be there for you and give you exactly what you need every time? Of course, NO ONE! But there is someOne! And His name is Jesus. He is not something your created or purchased, but He is someOne who created and purchased you! He loves you perfectly, and will never do anything that isn’t in your best interest. In view of His perfect love and care for you, lay your dead things down and reach for the One who is alive. Pray and ask Jesus to show you what dead things your are holding on to and ask Him for the strength to turn away from them and to turn to Him.
