Stop Trusting Worry
"But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do." James 1:6-8 (NIV)
For the last three summers my family has traveled to the beach for vacation. This past year, my boys finally had the courage and confidence to remain in the ocean. Playing in the ocean is not only fun, but it also comes with dangers. The dangers of an undertow and strong waves. My boys are still small, and when they enter the water, my “Daddy” radar is on high alert. I grew up swimming in the waters of the Jersey Shore and I’m well aware of how powerful waves can be. In a moment they can take you out further to sea then you would like. You feel helpless and scared. The same can be true for the believer who tries to navigate life without trusting in the character, goodness, and faithfulness of Jesus. When we are putting our trust in our own abilities, ideas, or other people, we can feel out of control. We feel like we can end up anywhere but our intended destination. We can feel like a cork in the water, being tossed between worry or faith. This can make us feel double minded and simply out-of-control. Jesus can’t work “in us” and “through us” while we are going back and forth between worry and faith. We have to pick a side. I don’t know about you, but I’m going to put my trust in Jesus, because worry never did anything for me, but Jesus has. Worry has only hurt me and led me to regret past actions. Jesus died for me and now lives to take care of me and fulfill His will for me. Because Jesus loves you, get out of the water and choose the solid and stable ground of trusting in Jesus. The only other option is worry, and worry can’t help you and worry doesn’t love you, Jesus does!
