"Dear brothers and sisters, not many of you should become teachers in the church, for we who teach will be judged more strictly. Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.” James 3:1-2 (NLT)

The words that we speak let us know whether our hearts are in good shape or not. They give us clues to whether we are being transformed by God’s Spirit or simply just stagnant (not growing). The Bible says, “…For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks” (Luke 6:45 - ESV). When I first believed in Jesus, I lost half of my vocabulary, if you know what I mean. I didn’t talk the same, and the things I desired were now different. To those who knew me, it was obvious. The way I talked changed because the source of my words changed - my heart. Like all believers, when I put my trust in Jesus, He gave me His Holy Spirit, along with a new heart. As a result, I was under the control of someone else and it showed in how I talked. I’m not just talking about cuss words. I’m talking about speaking in a way that builds people up, is truthful, and hopeful. In a way that helps people experience the love of Jesus and hear of the hope that is found by believing in Him. As you surrender your heart to Jesus more and more, your tongue will be directly affected. Your heart and tongue are connected and cannot be separated. Since this is true, surrender your heart to Jesus. You can’t control your tongue, only a heart that is trusting in Jesus daily can do that. So, whenever you find yourself talking in a way that is inconsistent with who Jesus is, ask him, in that moment, to do a deeper work in your heart.
