My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. - NIV Psalm 73:26
The world is a tough place andJesus let His disciples know early that they would encounter trouble. He also let them know to not become discouraged by the problems and circumstances they would encounter (John 16:33). Because of the fall, things aren’t working the way God intended, and that includes our emotions and will. We are often led by our emotions, and when this happens, it usually doesn’t turn out well. Emotions are unreliable. We all know what is like to worry about something feverishly without it ever coming to pass. It is easy to be led by our emotions when our focus is only on the present and the things of this world. The author of this Psalm is saying, that we can be sure our hearts (emotions) and strength (abilities) will betray and let us down. What will never disappoint us, is fully trusting in Jesus for our present and future. We are encouraged to focus on God and His ability to protect and keep us in any circumstance. He is not taken by surprise like we are, and He already has a plan to get us through whatever we are facing before we even knew the problem existed. When we look to God and know that we have the gift of His power and presence in this life and the life to come, we will not be overcome by the failure of our hearts. What are you facing that is causing your heart to fail? Look to God for your today and tomorrow. He can't fail!
