James 3:10-12-Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.
Sometimes our words please God and other times we say things that are destructive and are a slap in the face to God. We call ourselves Christians but struggle to control our tongues. We tell people we are Christians or that we go to church, then other times they see us and our words and actions don’t faithfully represent our holy God. I can say I’ve been there. I remember praying before my high school football games, then going out on the field and cursing. Speaking two different ways confused and exhausted me. It had me always trying to figure out who I really was. I would be faithful to God when I needed Him and curse when I wanted to gain popularity with my friends. Thinking back on those times makes me feel bad and ashamed of not being who God had called me to be. Yes, He forgives us, but I missed an opportunity to speak and show how awesome our God is for everyone around me. If Jesus is important to you and the savior of your life but your words are the same as everybody else, how do you expect them to take your faith seriously? Pray today that God would show you where you need to control your tongue and speak blessing not cursing.
