"So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." James 4:7 (NLT)
Have you ever seen a house that was absolutely infested with cockroaches? They will crawl into every crevasse and hole where they will breed, multiply, and overrun the owner. When the owner turns on the lights, the cockroaches will scatter to find a hiding place, so they aren’t discovered. The only way the owner can get rid of the roaches is to call an exterminator and over several treatments, the roaches will eventually be killed off.
The devil is a lot like cockroaches. He works in the dark quietly, so that you do not notice him crawling around behind the cabinets or inside the wall, and suddenly one day you are overrun. The devil, much like roaches, will scatter when he is exposed to the light. He cannot stay in the light because he knows that if seen, we will want to exterminate him out of our lives.
James 4:7 tells us to submit to God first so that we can resist the devil and then he will flee. The Gospel of John says that Jesus was “in the beginning” and that “in him is life and the life is the light of men.” It also says that “the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it.” (John 1: 1-5). Jesus is the light that the devil cannot overcome, and the devil will run away and hide so that the light will not expose his deeds. Today, focus on submitting your heart and sins to God so that Jesus, the “Light,” will cause the devil to flee from you!
