Evil Awareness

January 26, 2017

"To fear the Lord is to hate all evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech." Proverbs 8:13 (NIV)

Proverbs was written "for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight; for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair; for giving prudence to those who are simple, knowledge to those who are young-" (Proverbs 1:2-4); we are all young and could all use instruction so let's break this verse down.

"To fear the Lord is to hate all evil..."- Fearing God is following God with your heart, soul, mind, and strength. It's a love for God so strong you don't want to do anything that He wouldn't do so you mirror Him. It says in John 5:19, "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he see his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does", and that is how we should model our lives. So the next part of the verse says, "I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech". We all can be prideful, become arrogant, slip up, don't behave, or use foul language here and again; but we live in an imperfect world where perfection is impossible to achieve, and evil surrounds us everywhere we look. This verse tells us to hate these things as the Lord also does. We will never achieve perfection on this Earth like Jesus did but the more we look to Him, the easier this becomes.

Ask God to give you a new awareness for the evil that is around you so you can hate/ distance yourself from it instead of drawing closer to it.
