Better to live humbly with the poor than to share plunder with the proud. Proverbs 16:19 (NLT)
Pride (living for "me") is a life destroying attitude. Pride destroys the individual, the witness of God in their lives, and the people who happen to be in their blast radius. Pride puts us at odds with ourselves, God and others and robs us of the gift of giving because pride is all about taking. Taking credit, taking attention, taking affection, taking compassion, taking kindness, and taking generosity. You get the point, and humility (living for "others") is all about giving. People who are humble give life to others. They are refreshing to be around, and they are the ones you want to talk to when things are tough. Living Humbly is just better!
Jesus said about Himself, "Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart (humble), and you will find rest for your souls." Jesus says "take" from Me. I will be "gentle." I will "give." All of these words focus on us and others and not Himself. Jesus is a giver! We have been called to walk in the same way Jesus does, and He has "given" us His Spirit to do so.
If you are walking in pride, ask Jesus to forgive you. He longs to forgive you. Receive His forgiveness and strength and walk humbly before Him. If you choose to live in your pride, don't be surprised when you fall. And even after you have fallen, know He will still be there to help you up again. He will always forGIVE you when you come to Him!
