No Win In Worry

Enjoy our Throwback Thursday Devotional...

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” - Phil. 4:6-7 (NLT)

My 5 year old son Rylan is continuously afraid of the dark. Night after night as he makes his way to our room, I hear him in a full out sprint down the hallway. Often he will turn on every light between his bedroom and ours along the way. In the morning, when I ask him why he is running and why he must turn on every light, he answers, “I’m afraid.” I then begin to reassure him that there is nothing to be afraid of and even though it is dark, His mom, brother, and myself are the only ones in the house. Like my son Rylan, we too are afraid (worried), but not necessarily of the dark, but of the unknown. We are afraid of the unknown because it is out of our control. We are anxious about many things, but worrying can’t help. No one has ever said, “I was so worried and anxious, and then I simply just intensified my worry and everything got better.” In fact, the word used for anxious (worry) in this verse means to be of a “divided mind” - whether we will choose to go this way or that. Paul is saying, instead of continuing down the path of worry and anxiety, turn and head down the road of praying and trusting. Go to Jesus and His word, knowing he will ask you, “Why are you afraid?” He will remind you that He is with you and there is truly nothing that can ultimately hurt you. The result will be His peace in your heart and rest for your mind. You don’t have to sprint down the hallway of life afraid, your Savior is near.
