Fading Tears

February 6, 2017

"He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:4 (ESV)

What makes you cry? For me, sports movies like Rocky and Rudy make me cry. Even though I have shed a few tears while watching movies like most, my tears usually occur because of pain. The pain of rejection, loss, injury and death. Tears accompanied the hardest moments of my life. I don't remember my mom wiping away my tears (which I am sure she did), but I have experienced personally wiping away the tears of my two sons.

The care that motivates someone to wipe tears from another's face is an intimate thing. Think about how awkward it would be to let a stranger wipe your tears. When a loved one does it, both parties experience a closeness that can not be described by words. It is an action that communicates empathy and love. Because God wanted us to grasp how much he cares for and loves us, he used the illustration of wiping away our tears in heaven multiple times (Isaiah 25:8, Jeremiah 31:16, and Revelation 7:7; 21:4). God is letting us know that when we finally get to heaven, it will all be okay. There will be nothing in heaven that will be able to hurt us again. We will never have to look over our shoulders or wonder when things will go wrong. God will scoop us up in His lap and wipe away the years of hurt and disappointment from our eyes and our hearts.

The end of our verse says, "...nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” (emphasis mine).  How great that everything that has to do with the fall will be not be experienced "anymore." The old way will be gone forever, and the new and perfect way of heaven and earth will begin! Whatever has caused you pain in the past or threatens to cause you pain in the future, do not be afraid. There is an eternal home awaiting all God's children that will make the tears of this life fade like fog as the sun breaks through.
