Insults That Bless
"If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you." 1 Peter 4:14 (ESV)
Jesus said, "If the world hates you, understand that it hated Me first. 19If you were of the world, it would love you as its own. Instead, the world hates you, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world" (John 15:18-19).When Jesus says, "the world," he means a way of living apart from God and His ways. If we are "of the world," we love what the world loves. If we are followers of Jesus, we will love the things He loves. And what Jesus loves is people. Anytime we put things, accomplishments, and ourselves over people we are living according to the world's way.
When we live a life loving Jesus and people, it will not sit right with those who love the world. Either they will be drawn to Jesus, or they will hate us for exposing their sinful hearts in light of Jesus' life shining through. Jesus warned us not to be surprised when this happens. If they insulted the Savior of the world, how much more will they insult His followers?
If we are being insulted and made fun of for obeying Jesus, then we can rejoice. We can rejoice because it means His life is truly in us. It means we are accomplishing His will on the earth. It means we are blessed (have God's favor and His pleasure) because the Holy Spirit is working in us to show others Jesus. Next time you are picked on for being one of those "religious" people, celebrate! Next time you are made fun of for not going to the drinking party, celebrate! Next time you are insulted because you are saving yourself for marriage, celebrate! You are the Light of Jesus in a very dark world, and Jesus is pleased (you are blessed).
