We Need a Savior

"There is joy for those who deal justly with others and always do what is right." Psalms 106:3 (NLT)

Sometimes as we read the Bible, there will be a verse that stands out as odd, almost like it doesn’t fit. We know that God’s word is God-inspired, so these verses are an opportunity to dig in beyond the surface. Take Psalm 106:3 for example. “Blessed are those who act justly, who always do what is right.” If we skim over this verse, we might think, “Well… duh! Of course it’s best to be just and do what’s right.” But there are a couple of things about this verse that requires a closer look. First, notice that this verse says “always”. Do you know anybody today who always does what is right? Me neither. Second, while you might expect Psalm 106 to go on to give examples of people who live out this verse, the rest of the Psalm actually lists out sin after sin that God’s people had committed in the past – idolatry, rebellion, sacrificing their own children, and not believing God even after seeing him perform miracles and always provide for them. It tells us that God always remembered His people and saved them, but it was because of His love and goodness, not because they always did the right thing.

So we have to ask why this verse is included since no one can live up to this standard. How can anybody be blessed? Enter: Jesus. While there weren’t any people who had lived up to this verse when it was first written, there was one man that came later that did act justly and always do what was right, and that is Jesus Christ. Throughout the Bible, we will read of God’s standard and realize that we don’t live up to it on our own. That is why we need a Savior. By Jesus’s payment for our sins and his empowering Spirit, we are able to live out this verse – to act justly, to do what is right. And even though we are imperfect and will make mistakes, God’s grace allows us to walk in the blessing of a relationship with Him while He transforms our character to be more and more like Christ.
