Be A Better Spouse Now

"Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness?" 2 Corinthians 6:14 (NLT)

When my wife, Tonya, was in HS at a summer camp, she was challenged to start praying for her future spouse. We would later discover that was the very year I accepted Jesus as my Savior. Crazy right? God had a plan for us and had chosen that we be together as "believing" husband and wife before the foundation of the world.

The same goes for everyone reading this devotional. The question is, are you going to trust His plan for you concerning dating and a future spouse or are you just going to go with the flow and see how it turns out? I can tell you, if that's your plan, it will not turn out well.

There is a God-ordained principle that exists - who you hang out with is who you become. Now if this applies to all relationships, how much truer is it for relationships that are meant to go deeper or be more intimate like dating and especially marital relationships?

You see, this isn't even a hard question to answer. It is clear. What isn't clear is our hearts; wrong and selfish desires taint them. Our desire to have a boyfriend or girlfriend overpowers our better judgment. So instead of heeding Paul's warning, we jump into relationships with people who don't live for and love Jesus. If Jesus is the focus of our lives, how can we have a close and meaningful relationship with someone who doesn't know Jesus?

Don't let your desire to feel special, or loved by someone cloud the reality that you are already special and loved by Jesus. He has so much more for you and has determined that your future spouse is a Jesus follower. Instead of falling into the trap of having a relationship with someone who doesn't know Jesus, why don't you focus on your relationship with Jesus instead? Spend time growing in Him and growing in healthy relationships with other Jesus followers.

If you do this, you will become the kind of person that another Christian can count on to encourage them in their relationship with Him. You will become the future husband or wife that someone has always prayed for. Focus on becoming a better spouse now, and you will make a great boyfriend or girlfriend in the future. And by the way, it's probably a good idea to start praying for your future spouse now.

Our Leaders Lucas Mocniak and Brie Giuliani talk about this in this podcast series. Check it Out!
