Strength Over Immorality
"It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God..." 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 (NIV)
Paul is telling his people that lustful passions should not control God’s people. Sexual standards were found to be very low in the Roman Empire. Unfortunately, the same is still true today. The temptation to engage in premarital relations has always been powerful. Sexual desires must be placed under God’s control.
God created sex for procreation and pleasure; it is an expression of love between a husband and his wife. Many see sex as something to do, like an activity, instead of of an expression of love and gift from our Heavenly Father.
“It is God’s will that you shall be sanctified.” Sanctification simply means to be set apart for God's purposes. Sanctification needs to be present in every aspect of our lives. Sexual immortality is very evident in the Bible. We can see how David, Noah, Solomon, and Lot’s daughters were all significantly affected. It continues to be evident in today’s world. People are encouraged at school, by the media, and unfortunately, even in our homes.
Make a commitment to sanctify (set yourself apart for God) yourself in every area of your life, and your relationship with the Lord will be stronger than ever. Offer your weaknesses up to Him, and He will give you strength.
