"He required everyone—small and great, rich and poor, free and slave—to be given a mark on the right hand or on the forehead. And no one could buy or sell anything without that mark, which was either the name of the beast or the number representing his name. Wisdom is needed here. Let the one with understanding solve the meaning of the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. His number is 666." Revelation 13:16-18 (NLT)
Our verse today sounds straight out of a sci-fi, end of the world movie. Many have made much about the number 666, but the number itself has no magic power. The reality is that the number is representative of what many call the "unholy trinity."
The Bible gives us insight into a Holy Trinity made up of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The devil is not original, nor is he creative. He is a mimicker and a mocker. One of the ways the devil mimics the Holy Trinity is by revealing his evil through three separate entities. In Revelation, we are introduced to the devil, his antichrist, and the beast. These distinct individuals work together to try and deceive the world and draw people away from God's love.
Of course, if you read the end of the Book, which I highly recommend, you will see that they are unsuccessful. That is because evil cannot conquer Good, hatred cannot conquer Love, the unholy cannot conquer the Holy, the created cannot conquer the Creator, and the imperfect cannot conquer the Perfect.
According to Bible scholars, the number 7 is the number of perfection, and if we were to assign a number to the Holy Trinity, it would be 777. I'm sure you see where this is going. Since Father, Son, and Spirit are perfectly God the number 777 is associated with them. Since the unholy trinity is imperfect, it gets a lower number representation, which is 666. This number is also known as the number of man and expresses the world system and rebellion against God.
Anytime we operate on our terms or according to the world's system; we are living according to this antichrist system which the Bible teaches is already at work in the world (2 Thessalonians 2:7). We are living as mere men and women and not the redeemed and re-created children of God. Let's not live in partnership with the "unholy trinity" but in unity with the Holy Trinity.
