“But cowards, unbelievers (those without faith), the corrupt, murderers, the immoral, those who practice witchcraft, idol worshipers, and all liars- their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.” Revelation 21:8
When reading through Revelation 21, it brings this sense of security and joy to the reader because of how John describes what he is seeing - Heaven. He saw God dwelling with humanity (v. 3), God wiping away our tears, promising us no more pain or grief, and death no longer existing (v.4), and then the One on the throne (Jesus) tells John He is going to make all things new and that we are His inheritance (v. 5-7). And then you read verse 8, and it’s slightly scary and intimidating. But after John continues to describe the beauty of Heaven. It’s almost as if verse 8 doesn’t fit, but if we believe the Bible to be guided by the Holy Spirit, then it totally fits exactly where it’s supposed to be.
Paul warns us in multiple letters to the churches that this list of people mentioned in Rev 21 would not inherit the Kingdom of Heaven (Gal 5:19-21, Eph 5:5-7, 1 Tim 1:8-10). Those described in this list are those who continued in these certain activities without repentance. Paul, in his letters, emphasizes the forgiveness still available through repentance to Jesus. At the time the readers read these passages of Paul, there’s still grace, but once Jesus comes or we perish, it is too late to turn around and Jesus is just stating that truth to John in Revelation. So share Jesus with someone today, even if it’s without mentioning His name. He is the only one who can forgive and save them from the lake mentioned in Revelation 21:8.
