"And they were greatly astonished, saying among themselves, 'Who then can be saved?' But Jesus looked at them and said, 'With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible.'" Mark 10:26-27 (NKJV)
In the previous verses Jesus has an encounter with a wealthy young man who asks Jesus what he should do to make it to heaven. Jesus tells the young man, to sell all he has and says to him, "Follow me." But because he loved his money and possessions, he refused to "follow" Jesus.
The ONE thing he lacked is the same THING we all lack. The ability to "follow" Jesus. The question the young ruler asked Jesus was, "What shall I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus responded with, "One thing you lack..." The ONE thing the young ruler lacked wasn't a generous heart, but the ability to choose and "Follow" Jesus. Choosing to not "follow" Jesus was what was keeping him from obtaining eternal life, not giving all his possessions away.
It is impossible to "follow" Jesus in our own strength. That is not my opinion, it is Jesus' words: "with man this is impossible." Like the rich young ruler, our problem isn't our stuff, but our lack of strength to lay those things down in order to "follow" Jesus.
Today don't walk away sad (like the young ruler) but acknowledge your inability to "follow" Jesus in your own strength and ask Him to give you the ability to lay down whatever is keeping you from following Him and experiencing Eternal Life.
If you try to live for Jesus on your own, you will fail. Instead, if you ask Jesus to do the impossible, He can and will.
