The Secret of Contentment

April 14, 2017

"I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength." Philippians 4:12-13 (NLT)

Contentment (satisfaction) is hard to come by. If asked to describe someone, how many of us would use the word "content." Not too many people I know, including myself, would be characterized as content. Contentment means being satisfied with who one is, what one has, and where one is in life. The opposite of contentment can be seen in our grumbling and complaining about what we don't have, what we look like, how our meal was messed up at the restaurant, and how are teachers are unfair.

We are dissatisfied with so much because we don't see Jesus as being involved in every detail of our lives. We see Jesus as one who watches from the sidelines until we ask Him to get involved in the "game". But the truth is, Jesus is very involved in the "game" of our lives and He has set the rules and the boundaries for us. When we grumble and complain, we are grumbling and complaining about what Jesus has called us to, who He has called us to and who He has made us to be.

What if we learned from Paul "the secret." The secret to being content no matter the situation, whether trivial or desperate, hurtful or joyful or having much or little. Paul teaches us that the secret to being content recognizes that we can do everything (being victorious in the purposes that He has willed for our lives) through Jesus power when we surrender ourselves and our situations to Him.

Whether your current position is good or bad, Jesus is involved; so trust in Him by surrendering yourself and your circumstances to Him who gives you the strength to be content and to do His will. You can do "all things" because Jesus is an "all the time," "in every situation," and "in every detail" Savior.
