Longing for God

“O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water.” Psalm 63:1

Can you read Psalm 63:1 and say that it applies to your personal life? Is Jesus your God? What is the first thing that you do when you wake up? What does it mean for “your soul to thirst for God”?

My phone is my alarm and when I wake up I am preprogrammed to open my phone and look at the news, youtube, and emails from work. It takes a conscious effort to turn off the alarm and set my phone down so that I can give thanks to God for another day, because every day we wake up is a gift from God and is not guaranteed just because we are young and seem healthy. God’s desire is for us to seek him and look for him to guide us in all things, and when we seek him early in the morning we are establishing a routine that before we get out of bed we are looking for God to show us what he has in store for us.

Jesus said “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.” (Matthew 5:6) Our bodies long for food and water if we go long enough without it, but that is a physical craving not spiritual. Does your soul thirst for God? Jesus once told the woman by the well that if she would ask he would give her “living water”, and whoever drinks that “living water” will never thirst again. Jesus was not talking about literal water, but a spiritual water that we can only receive when we believe in him.

I pray that we all learn how to seek God so that our souls would thirst for Him and that our bodies would long to be shaded in his grace and righteousness. God, give us a mind that is focused on your plan for us today and give us hearts that seek to know you as living water in the desert of our lives.
