“You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”
Matthew 5:13-16 (NLT)
In Jesus day there was no refrigeration or electric to provide energy and artificial light like today. Food went bad and light was limited to the daytime and the use of oil lamps.
Since there was no refrigeration, salt was used (as it still is today in certain parts of the world) to keep meat from spoiling quickly and to season it at the same time. Jesus, trying to help his disciples understand what affect they should have on their communities, called them the salt of the earth. Every one of them would have pictured a heavily salted peace of meat hanging from hooks, keeping the meat from rotting and flavoring it at the same time. They had no doubt what the salt did, they simply wondered how they could do the same as Jesus Followers.
Jesus wanted them to see the relationship. The meat was the decaying world, decaying because of its rebellion against God. And the salt reacted with this decay to slow it’s effects and sustain life. The salt also provided pleasant flavor for the meat, so people would enjoy the meat as they ate.
Jesus was teaching that when we live for Him in this decaying world and interact with people in our communities, God uses us to bring life to lifelessness and flavor to a world that is bland. People take notice and Jesus is tasted and experienced.
Light on the other hand has one purpose - to reveal what can’t be seen otherwise. When Jesus followers live devoted to Christ, we reveal who God is and what He is like to people who couldn’t see Him before. As Jesus followers, Jesus lives in us and so we are simply called to LET His light (life) shine in us and through us so those closest to us can experience Him. By experiencing Him, they have the opportunity to know Him and spend eternity with Him forever.
The world we live in is decaying, tasteless and dark. Be salt and Be light! Allow people to Taste Jesus and See Jesus through your life of worship to Him.
