The Trouble with Double

"When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, 'Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.' Jesus replied, 'Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.' Another disciple said to him, 'Lord, first let me go and bury my father.' But Jesus told him, 'Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.'” - Matthew 8:18-22

When there is a crowd of believers (ie. at camp, retreats, D2S, etc.) it is easy to say “I’m going to follow Christ” or “I’m going to give my life to the Lord” because it almost seems effortless or like a fairytale in those situations; but, Jesus tells us right here in this verse that is can be difficult. When he says “the Son of Man has no place to lay his head”, he is talking about here on THIS earth.

As believers and followers of Christ, this is our temporary home but heaven is where we were created to be.

The world is not going to give believers the security that we look for, which can become uncomfortable. Instead of fulfilling ourselves with the things the world says will fulfill us, we need to be finding our security in Christ and living out the plan he has for each of us specifically (which at times, can be uncomfortable).

Because of free will, we can say "No" or tell God, “I will, but not right now”, like the second disciple in this passage. This man wanted to spend the rest of his fathers life with him, and then follow Jesus.

We do this in our lives as well; we want to live for the world now and then follow Christ later. The more we keep putting him off, the longer it will take us to actually pick up our cross and follow him. Jesus tells us in these verses that the things we desire from the world will die and if we want to live with him to let them die without us attached.

Living the double life, of the world and with God, doesn’t work . . . I’ve tried. So ask God today, to help you put down the things in the world that give you a temporary sense of security and to have the courage to make the decision to follow him heart, soul, mind, and strength. Even though at times it is difficult, the Lord gives his followers security that the world can’t even begin to imagine.

Lord Jesus, with your help I am turning away from the things of this world that do not bring true life and I am turning to You, the author of Life. By Your grace I choose to follow You with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength. Amen
