“Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves. You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act.” Matthew 7:15-16a (NLT)
In Jesus day, like today, people would teach certain things apart from the truth of God and His Word in order to make a profit. That’s why they called them “False Profits.” Haha. Sorry, “False Prophets.”
Today false prophets come in all shapes and sizes teaching all sorts of false and harmful ideas. We hear them every day in our own thoughts, on our tv screens, and across our bluetooth ear buds. They are politicians, musicians, artists, friends, teachers and religious leaders.
They teach, “My way leads to fullness.” “My way leads to happiness.” “If you listen to my advice, everyone will like you.” “If you wear what I wear, you will matter.” “If you treat girls like objects, your friends will think you are a man.” “Go ahead do what feels good, the consequences will never catch up to you.” “The rules of this universe don’t apply to you.”
Sadly, many of the famous people we look up to and adopt some of these harmful ideas from, don’t even know we exist. They won’t be there when our loved one dies, and they won’t call when our hearts are broken. They simply are peddling a teaching and a philosophy of life that will make them money, your money! They are false prophets and they don’t know up from down. Jesus called them “blind guides.” How do they know the best way to live, and what gives them the moral authority to tell you the best way to live?
If a philosophy or idea about life is good, then it should produce a good life. But that is not what we see in the lives of those in Hollywood. We see brokenness and hurt at the highest levels and we consume it in high doses. In a distorted way, we enjoy hearing of the defeats, divorces, addictions, fights and even deaths of the stars we worship and pattern our lives after. If this wasn't true TMZ wouldn't be in business.
The only person who lived a perfect life and demonstrated perfect love was Jesus. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life! His way of life is the only way. He is Life’s author and sustainer. Study His life by reading the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) over and over. After reading them multiple times, read them again. Look at Jesus with fresh eyes, ask Him to reveal Himself to you personally through His Word, and pray for wisdom to tell the difference between what is false and true. He will provide you with the strength to live for Him and like Him as you surrender yourself to His will and Ways. Look to Jesus; He is looking to you because He loves you.
