“Then Jesus got into the boat and started across the lake with his disciples. Suddenly, a fierce storm struck the lake, with waves breaking into the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, ‘Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!’ Jesus responded, ‘Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!’ Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm.” Matthew 8:23-26 (NLT)
What an amazing picture - The disciple's boat is in the middle of great storm and Jesus is sleeping. He is in the middle of a storm and He is at peace. Now don’t be fooled. This isn’t a peace that Jesus simply possessed because He was the Son of God; it was a peace cultivated over years of relationship with His Heavenly Father. A love that was grown through faithful, sacrifical, and consistent time.
Relationships simply take time, and a relationship with God is no different.
Some reading this have just come out of a storm. How did you handle it? Did you panic? Did you ask Mom or Dad to bail you out? Did you just wait for the storm to pass while you feared the worst?
Others reading this are in the middle of a storm right now. If that is true, I would tell you to go lay down next to Jesus and sleep, but many reading this probably aren’t ready for that step. So why don’t you go get Jesus. Don’t try and deal with this storm alone, Jesus is with you, like He was with the disciples. He is with you and in you. Ask Him to settle your heart and to settle the storm swirling around you.
Know this, no matter weather He settles your heart or settles the storm, your faith will be changed. You will have experienced Jesus in a new way and your relationship and trust in Him and His goodness will grow.
The rest of us, are heading into a storm, eventually. Jesus said, “Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” (NLT). I know this doesn’t sound encouraging, but be encouraged, Jesus has won. He has conquered sin and death, and nothing in this world can take that away from you.
Get ready for the storm by spending time with Jesus so that when the wind blows and the waves rise up, you will be able to lie down next to Jesus. He awaits your company. He is with you, loves you, and will get you through the storm.
Pray: Jesus, help me to lie next to you through the storms of my life. Amen.
