“Look, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. So be as shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves... When you are arrested, don’t worry about how to respond or what to say. God will give you the right words at the right time. For it is not you who will be speaking—it will be the Spirit of your Father speaking through you." Matthew 10:16, 19-20 (NLT)
One of the scariest things for all Jesus followers is sharing our faith. We always worry if we are going to say the right things. I am so glad that Jesus already knew this and encouraged us, so we will not falter when the opportunity arises.
Jesus told His followers then - and the same is true for us today - that they would be like sheep (those appearing weak and helpless - but actually strong in Jesus) among wolves (those appearing tough and terrifying - but actually weak and susceptible to sin and death). He told them they would experience some intimidating situations and hardship. In the face of it all, He gave them hope. Jesus showed them that He would be with them through the presence of His Spirit and that He would also give them the words to speak to anyone who would ask.
This truth should make us all feel better knowing that the burden to speak the perfect words isn't our responsibility. Jesus says the Holy Spirit will "give" His followers the right words.
So, what is our responsibility then? Our responsibility is not worry about speaking perfect words but to live in a way that reveals the PERFECT SAVIOR we serve. We usually think our words will win people, but the Bible is clear throughout, that how we live and love in the Name of Jesus is what softens and wins people's hearts. Jesus said clearly, "Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” (John 13:35 NLT).
Don't get caught up worrying about what you will say, Jesus will provide that. Ask Him to work in the deep parts of your heart, so your actions will line up with the words He provides, and the people you encounter will see Christ.
