Troubling Joy

"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." James 1:2-4 (NIV)

When we look at verse two, it is not common in this world for people to find joy during troubling times. The words are not saying to put a smile on your face and pretend all is good, but instead, have a positive outlook. This verse speaks of the strength that only God can give us through the difficult areas in our lives.

The word perseverance simply means continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties; but when we apply it with God as our focus, the meaning becomes much more intense. The Theology definition is continuance in a state of grace to the end, leading to eternal salvation. We need to allow the presence of God in our lives, in any situation, to make us strong as our dependence upon Him grows. We need to thank God for being with us during all times in our lives, good or bad. We need to know that our God will never leave us alone, He is always here to comfort us.

Looking at the final three words, not lacking anything, is not merely a promise from God but a guarantee from our Creator. I love these words merely because of the simplicity of them. God will provide what we need and you will not want for anything. That means that happiness will follow you all of your days, no matter what the circumstances are that come your way. Take rest today in the open arms of Jesus and let His love be found in you, God Bless.
