He Left Heaven For You
“In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature with God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage; rather he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death-even death on a cross!” Philippians 2:5-8
These verses should blow our minds every time we read them. The fact that Jesus, who created the world and everything in it, including us, obediently left the Father’s side at the Father’s command to become one of us is just crazy. He stooped from the exaltation and glory of Heaven to come to earth in a cold cave. Just for us. And not only did He live here for 33 years, He then died the most horrific death, at the Father’s command. Just for us. But what I believe Paul is trying to get across to us, the church, in these verses is how to live this humbled life he calls us to live in the verses before (v. 1-4). He challenges us to live in unity and put others above ourselves, and then in verses 5-8, he gives us the perfect example of how to do that: Jesus. Not only did Jesus die once and for all, for our sins on the cross, He died daily to His flesh so He would remain the perfect sacrifice for us imperfect humans. This is how we ought to live: humble as Jesus is humble, dying to our flesh, so we can glorify God and serve those around us. Prayer: Jesus, thank you for leaving the loftiness of Heaven to be with us. You left Heaven to come to earth, so that we who are on earth can be in Heaven with you. Guide us to wake up every morning willing to surrender to our flesh as you did and let our minds and heart be like Yours. In Jesus’ name, amen.
