"I have no one else like Timothy, who genuinely cares about your welfare. All the others care only for themselves and not for what matters to Jesus Christ." Philippians 2:20-21 (NLT)
The reason why selflessness is rare in society is that it’s a “battle of the fittest mentality ” in this world. It’s a world where people won’t do things unless they will benefit from them. They only care about themselves and nobody else.
The truth as to why we are called to live selfless lives is because God sent his only son to do the most unselfish act in dying for our sins so that we could have the life with God as originally intended. God did this to show us that caring for other people is essential and that people matter.
If we choose to follow Christ, we must be selfless like Christ was and live for others and not for the things that our flesh desires. That means building relationships with people and trusting in people has to be a common occurrence. People who don’t know Christ will want things to be about them.
Selflessness, as defined, can mean more than just putting others before yourself. I think selflessness means caring more about a relationships than we do about being right. I think selflessness is forgiveness when people wrong you, showing people grace, and showing people mercy. Genuine concern is so much more than asking someone how they are doing; it is building a relationship with them and showing them that you truly care.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, help me to live the selfless life that you lived for the glory of God and toward the genuine care and love for others. Holy Spirit, warn me of my selfishness so that I can allow Christ's care and concern to be known. In Jesus Name. Amen!
