Who are You Counting On?

“For we who worship by the Spirit of God are the ones who are truly circumcised. We rely on what Christ Jesus has done for us. We put no confidence in human effort…” Philippians 3:3 (NLT)

The Bible says, that we are saved and that we continue to grow spiritually by trusting in Jesus’ work on the cross for us. If I asked you how you plan on getting to heaven, What would your answer be? Would it start with you, doing something, like being a good person, or trying your best? Or would it start with, believing (faith) in Jesus and His death for your sins on the cross? Would it end with, trusting (faith) that His resurrection gives you new spiritual life through a deepening relationship with Him?

If your answer to that question starts with you and what you do (good works), you are putting confidence and trust in you for salvation (forgiveness of sins and eternity with Jesus). The Bible says, “So we are made right with God through faith and not by obeying the law (our good works).” (Romans 3:28).  It also says, “Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it (thinking it is what we have done and not Jesus).” (Ephesians 2:9).

Remember, salvation and growing spiritually starts with Jesus and what He has done and what He will continue to do - “And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” (Philippians 1:6).

It's His work and initiation and our willing response to Him.

Our part is to respond to what He has done and is doing by obedience to His will and drawing closer to Him through Bible reading, attending church, serving others, hanging with believers, and prayer. You know you have faith (true trust in Him) when you do these things as a priority in your life.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, help me to trust in your work on the cross as the final demonstration of your acceptance and love for me. Help me to never believe that I earn salvation or Your love through what I do. May I respond to Your love and grace through worship and obedience. May I live in the reality of Your smile toward me.
