Have You Learned Contentment?
"...for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength." Philippians 4:10-13 (NLT)
I wish there were a magic bullet for contentment. You know, just have God make me content. But like most everything involving the spiritual life, growth is a process, and learning contentment is no different.
Contentment defined is, "Satisfied, ease of mind." Why are our minds so restless and uneasy? It seems satisfaction is slippery. I believe the cause is that we look with our eyes and not through our eyes.
Looking with our eyes represents our physical passions and lusts. When we let them control us, we are looking with our eyes. Our appetites are calling the shots in our lives. When our flesh leads us, we become out of control and contentment becomes impossible. Unease happens because what we think is enough is never enough.
On the flip side, when we look through our eyes with our redeemed hearts, then our contentment is found in Jesus only. He becomes enough no matter what our circumstances, positions, or possessions. We are satisfied and have ease of mind because Jesus is enough and we experience power over wrongful desires.
Like Paul, we need to learn that the secret to contentment is Jesus and knowing I can experience victory over my sinful lusts with being satisfied in Him alone.
Lord Jesus, forgive me when I let my fallen nature dictate my thoughts and actions. Help me to come to a place in my life where you are enough. You are all I need. May I learn to be content because I walk closely with the One who teaches me contentment. In Jesus Name. Amen!
