"Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. “There is still one thing you haven’t done,” he told him. “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” At this the man’s face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions." Mark 10:21-22 (NLT)
The person in our verse is a rich young man who (in our devotional from 2 days ago) asked Jesus what he needed to "do" to inherit eternal life.
Jesus meets him and those in the crowd right where they are. He helps them, and especially the young man, test this idea that good works (doing) obtain eternal life. So Jesus begins to ask him some questions about his own goodness as it regards keeping the commandments.
The man’s answer is actually surprising, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.” I love what it says next, “Jesus felt genuine love for him.” He didn’t laugh at such a wrong and foolish answer, but he loved him knowing he was lost - a sheep without a shepherd.
In His love and compassion, Jesus doesn’t leave him hanging…
There is ONE THING
Jesus tells him the ONE THING he lacks - not choosing to turn from his sinful way of life and FOLLOWING JESUS over the temporal things of this world. For this young man, it was his desire for money and his possessions that kept him from Jesus. Notice the only doing required was to FOLLOW. Choosing to follow Jesus only needs someone to turn from self by confession and repentance and turn to living for and following Jesus by humble surrender. Easier said than done, of course.
This is true of all of us; it may not be money and possessions, but it is something. What is that something or someone you are choosing to live for over following Jesus? What causes you to turn away from Jesus instead of TO? If you are not sure, ask the Holy Spirit to search your heart and show you. Jesus desires for you to choose following Him over a life of sadness and regret.
Prayer: Lord Jesus forgive me when I have chosen the temporary things of this world over You. Give me the grace and courage to forsake things that lead to death and follow You the Creator and Sustainer of True Life. Amen.
