Fallow Ground

Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap steadfast love; break up your fallow ground, for it is the time to seek the LORD, that he may come and rain righteousness upon you. - Hosea 10:12 (ESV)

The ground Hosea envisions our plowed fields that are no longer weed-covered, stony, or hard, but instead, they are ready for planting. They are prepared for the work of God. Let’s take one step back before we break ground.

There is ground in our lives that is yet to be tended to by the Makers hands, and today we need to turn that ground over to Him. What the untouched spiritual fields of our lives need, is not just to be broken up, but they need a starting place. To be exposed to God's sunlight and to God's free air, to be influenced by God’s light and warmth, and the dew and soft showers of His grace.

We always want to put the plow to the ground immediately, but God is saying expose it to my basics first. The essentials, the word and prayer, my sun and my air, my change in temperature, my barometric pressure. The other spiritual fields in your life have been trained up and yield deeper and more prominent crops. Let’s start this fallow ground with some sunlight and warmth. The basics, bring it up to speed over time like the other productive fields in your life. It might not produce its greatest crop in the first year, but it’s a start.

The plow isn’t always the start for the fallow ground sometimes it needs to kill what’s on the surface before it can ever start to move underground. Tilling under still living things doesn’t guarantee that they will die, but tilling under dead things is a burial for those things never to surface again. Birth to new ground and new righteousness rained on what was once dead but now has been sowed with righteousness to produce not only a righteous harvest, but sunlight, warmth, dew, and rain of righteousness upon your life.

Prayer: God my prayer is today that you would just shed a little of your light on the unbroken ground in my life in Jesus Name Amen.
