Who is Your Master?

“Why are you so angry?” the Lord asked Cain. “Why do you look so dejected? You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.”

Genesis 4:6-7 (NLT)

Notice what God said to Cain about the nature of sin. He talked about it like it had a mind like it was a person. He said it was, “crouching, right at the door, eager to control…” That sounds just like sin, doesn’t it? Sometimes it just sneaks up on us when we least expect it and gets us.

You know, When you lost your cool and said that terrible thing you regret; Or when you planned on going to the party and not drinking; When you started dating and said, I am going to stay pure until I am married.

God told Cain to control it (sin) and to master it. We find out just one verse later (v. 8) that sin got the best of Cain, and he killed his brother in a field.

Just like Cain, God tells us to “Subdue it and be its master.” When we look at our lives it doesn’t look like we are doing much subduing and mastering; it looks like sin is mastering us. It appears and feels like SIN is the one in control.

In Romans 6:7 it says, "For when we died with Christ (saved), we were set free from the power of sin."

At salvation; sin lost its control over us and, just a handful of verses farther down from Romans 6:7 is 6:14. It reads, "Sin is no longer your master..."

Say that with me, "Sin is no longer my master!"

Do you believe that? It is true. Now that sin and self are no longer your masters, Jesus can be!

Prayer: Lord Jesus thank you that you have set me free from the power of sin in my life. Help me to remember in times of weakness that through Your Holy Spirit I can overcome the wrong desires of my flesh. In Jesus Name. Amen.
