The Difference Between for & with

"From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. Acts 17:26-27 (NLT)

Have you ever wondered why you were born who you are, where you are, and when you are? According to Paul, God has marked out the who, where, and when of your life. God did this so you would seek after Him and reach out to find Him. He made you perfectly to be able to have a relationship with Himself and to make disciples with Him.

Notice I said with Him and not for Him. There is a big difference between those two words, and it is more than spelling. It is in attitude.

When we do for God, we are assuming we are doing things with our own abilities, wisdom, and strength. This couldn’t be further from the truth. When Jesus gave the disciples the commandment to “Go and make disciples…,” He added this important detail, “And be sure of this: I am with you always…” (Matthew 28:19-20).

He didn’t send them to go and make disciples on their own. He gave them this command and then told them He would be with them. He wanted them to know, not only were they perfectly fit to be His witnesses, but they would be His witnesses with Him. Jesus would be there by their side leading and empowering.

God has perfectly created you the way you are, for the family you are in, the neighborhood you are a part of, the school you attend, the band you play with, and the team you are on so that you can be a witness and make disciples (Jesus Followers) with Him.

Remember this truth; only Jesus can make Jesus followers. So if you try to make Jesus followers without Jesus, you will only make followers of yourself. That’s not exactly what Jesus had in mind.

Ask yourself, “Have I been trying to go and make disciples for Jesus or with Jesus?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, forgive me when I have lost sight of going and making disciples with you. Allow my heart to recognize that you are always with me so that I will always serve with You. Amen.
