Jesus Has Wings
"How precious is your unfailing love, O God! All humanity finds shelter in the shadow of your wings." Psalm 36:7 (NLT)
The picture here is that of a hen hiding her chicks from danger under her feathers. She will shelter her chick, even if she dies in the process. After napalm was dropped on Hiroshima, Nobuo Hayashi returned home to find a hen scorched to death with her chicks still tucked safely beneath her wing. He was amazed to find they were still alive. In the same way, God sacrifices himself to save us (1).
His love toward us is unfailing. That means there is nothing God will not go through in order to provide safety and salvation for His children. This is exactly what God demonstrated by sending Jesus to die on the cross for our sins. We need to understand that Jesus was a willing and eager participant in the cross. Hebrews 12:2 says, "For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame..." We were the joy (Jesus spending eternity with us) that gave Jesus the motivation to endure the cross and its torture.
Jesus' love for us is the same as the Father's. This is exactly what Jesus expressed over the people of Jerusalem when He said, "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem... How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn't let me." (Matthew 23:38).
Jesus will never fail to permit us to seek protection and grace under the shadow of His wings; the question is, are you willing to let Him?
Lord Jesus, forgive me when I have run to others for protection and life. Or when I have simply relied on myself, instead of seeking to hide under the shadow of Your wings. Help me to always remember that no matter what I go through Your wings are a safe haven for me always. Thank You and Amen.
